Implant Operation

Post-Operative Instructions for Dental Implant Surgery

What are the Complications of Dental Implants?

After an implant operation, these post-operative instructions should be carefully followed. These are the most common post-operative complications of dental implants.

Firstly, it is very normal to feel some discomfort after implant surgery. Pain will constantly diminish. If your doctor prescribed medication after implant surgery as a post-operative instruction, they must be used according to the directions as needed. Please make sure you eat or drink some type of food or drink in your stomach before taking your medication. Otherwise, drugs can make you feel nauseated. All medications should not exceed the suggested dosage.

Most of the time, there could be minimal bleeding since the operation area closed with sutures. Bleeding after implant surgery may continue for a couple of hours. The best way to stop it is to fold two pieces of gauze over surgical area and gently bite for thirty or sixty minutes. Rest quietly with your head in upright position. If bleeding keeps going, use gauze damp for an additional thirty minutes. Pink or blood-colored saliva may be seen for 2-3 days after surgery and does not indicate a problem. Avoid vigorous chewing spitting or rinsing or drinking through a straw for 24 hours. Allowing the gum texture to rest undisturbed assists the healing process. Avoid continually pulling your lip to see the operation site.

Swelling is a normal reaction of your body after implant surgery. It is an indicator of the healing process. Swelling may be at a maximum level in 2 or 3 days after implant operation. Applying ice packs continuously on cheeks over implant surgical area is helpful for the first day and the rest. For the first 48 hours, you are supposed to rest and relax without intensive physical activity. After that, you may return your daily routine.

You are advised to soft foods that you can eat without chewing for 12 hours after implant surgery. Some suggested foods are:

  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Pasta
  • Soup
  • Creamed Cereals
  • Yogurt
  • Pudding, etc.

Best way to prevent infection and ensure healing period is to keep your mouth clean. It is suggested that you start rinsing your mouth with a warm saltwater gargle (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Proceed gargle activity with saltwater mixture 3 or 4 times in a day following the next few days after implant surgery. Change your toothbrush and use a soft bristle brush and toothpaste after meals. Be gentle in area where operation is conducted as you brush your teeth. If bleeding begins after brushing, return the use of gauze damp as described before. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously on the day of implant surgery.
